Serendipity Studio and Cresten Capital seek to commission an artist or team of artists to create an original work on a grand piano from 1914. The piano becomes its own interactive piece of art as painted by local artist(s). The installation could also be a painted mural with three dimensional or interactive elements. This piano will be on display in the grand foyer of the historic Shriver Square building.
The piano is an antique and was most recently homed at the History Club in Sioux Falls. The piano does still play and the finished design must ensure that the piano is still playable after the artwork is completed. The artist should give consideration to the historical aspects of the piano, the History Club, and the Shriver Square building.
Mural Specifics
The piano is 78” long, 63” wide, and 13” deep. It is expected that this installation will cover at least 50% of this area.
The installation will be viewed by people entering the Shriver building to either see the art installation or visit one of the businesses located in the building.
Artist signature is allowed within this parameter.
Honorarium
The honorarium is $1,000 total which shall constitute full compensation for all services, goods, expenses, and materials to be performed and furnished in the design, creation, and installation of the exhibit. The honorarium will be paid 50% upon signing of contract and paid 50% upon installation completion.
Application Requirements
This is an opportunity for emerging and professional artists alike to showcase their work through a unique project. Individual artists and collaborative teams are both eligible, though teams must use one application.
Artists are required to submit at least one and no more than three conceptual renderings of proposed artwork. Artists must also submit at least one and no more than four links to examples of their completed work that depict the artistic style they intend to use for the project. One paragraph stating your concept and why you are interested in participating in the project is also required.
Criteria used to select artwork includes, but is not limited to, suitability of design for site, aesthetic quality, broad-based interest and appeal for all ages, and quality of artist’s previous works.
Space to paint the piano will be provided at the Shriver building during regular hours that the building is open. Additional arrangements can be made if requested. The piano is available for viewing during the time of the call. Artist will need to care not to damage the area.
To ensure the longevity of the artwork, loose materials like glitter and sand cannot be included in the design.
